[02/28/2006, 17:49] Escaping Stormpay in the nick of time
Well, I've finally started to feel the effects of stormpay, despite my best efforts to avoid them at all costs since I started autosurfing 9 months ago.

When stormpay announced to surf sites that it would have to be their way or the highway, I was resigned to using them. On February 1st, I used my credit card to transfer enough money into my stormpay account to get NetIBA certified, because if I was forced to go with stormpay I didn't want to have to pay the high fees for uncertified members. But before I purchased my membership, everything started to go south and I thankfully thought the better of it. On February 7th I requested that the money be withdrawn into my checking account, because I didn't want my money to get locked up in Stormpay.

On February 3rd, part of my December Vivasurf earnings were paid into my Stormpay account because I was too impatient to wait for them to do it with e-gold. This must have been before Stormpay got wise to Vivasurf and froze their account. On the 7th I requested that money be withdrawn to my checking account as well.

Both of those withdrawals sat as pending in my account for weeks, despite the fact that one of them was my own money. Then, finally, the money appeared in my checking account, one on the 22nd, and the other on the 24th. And then just yesterday, I get an email stating that the vivasurf transaction resulted in a chargeback. But, since my stormpay account balance was zero, it's now negative. Tell me how that works?! Vivasurf's stormpay account now includes money that is really sitting in my checking account. Stormpay's money appears to be just as virtual as that of the ponzis they have been so vigilant in shutting down. Interestingly, the chargeback includes the stormpay fees, so they are double-dipping, in a sense.

Some people are spreading rumors that Stormpay has been recovering those funds by dipping into peoples' bank accounts. Reading through the forums, I have not been able to find a first hand account of this. It's all rumors and hearsay. In fact, in an interview with the media earlier this month, stormpay denied that they are doing anything of the sort. As of now, it appears that it's all internal. If anyone has had something like this happen to them and can back up their assertion with proof, I'd be very interested to see it.
[02/26/2006, 06:24] eProfitSurf paying!
What a surprise... Just received an email this evening stating that I had received a payment into my auto-surf-money account. Sure enough, eProfitSurf deposited my earnings from the previous month. Since my account at auto-surf-money isn't verified yet, I have to wait 5 days before I can reqest the funds be withdrawn. Still, a breath of life from any surf site these days is a good sign.

[02/22/2006, 17:07] With 12DailyPro gone, who's left?
Things with 12DailyPro are just getting worse and worse. Charis' latest move is to cancel the convention she's been planning for months now, claiming that because of the media attention she has earned over the past month, the convention "could become a volatile event that could exacerbate current problems and possibly damage our relations with investigators." In plain English, I think that means that she doesn't want herself or her members to wind up in front of a camera, unable to answer questions about her business model. Her attorney claims that they are cooperating with the FBI, and because of that it is inappropriate to comment while they are investigating.

It's no secret that many other surf sites invested in 12DailyPro as a means to finance their own programs. GrandHits and 911Hitz were among them, as they made clear in a message on their member page a few days ago (before they took the sites down). Nate at KnightSurfers, in his admirably forthcoming style, has admitted in the past that he believes in reinvesting in the industry. He undoubtedly lost a pretty sizeable chunk with 12DailyPro, yet he believes that he can continue operating his program with minimal slowdowns. He seems to be one of the more dedicated admins out there, and so I applaud him for that. I hope that he can make it work. I'm currently awaiting payout from a Moneybookers upgrade that I made before they froze his account. He claims that he is in the final stages of getting that money released to him, and at that point he'll be able to level with people like me. It should be any day now...

VivaSurf seems like it is poised to capitalize on 12DailyPro's problems. Vivasurf.us was launched as a way to get around the stormpay problem, but it's evolved into something else now. Vivasurf.us is now a 14% /10 day program, and the new home to a lot of dissatisfied 12DailyPro members. Although Vivasurf had its own problems with Stormpay and has deferred all paymets this month, he seems like he's willing to try to work things out. I'm in for a test drive at the new site, so we'll see how it goes. Robert for sure has a few investments outside the surf industry. His Empowerism page is shown frequently while surfing his sites, as well as one for Kemptech Domains, another site that he owns. He has clearly diversified and is trying to make a real legitimate buck with our upgrades in order to pay us.

Flosurf was a smaller program in which I've been a member for a few months. Flo is very pleasant and forthcoming, and she also seems to be one that we can rely on. Her payouts to date have not been delayed at all. Luna-surf.info is another program that I haven't promoted much, as it's still in the testing phase. Tim, the admin, has also been quite honest about the state of his program and has made it abundantly clear that he has no plans to fold up or reneg on his obligations to the members.

Eprofitsurf and Auto-surf.biz, which were run by the same folks, have now merged. Everything from your auto-surf.biz account should have been combined with Eprofitsurf, so now you just surf the one site, which operates under the old Eprofitsurf terms of 2% for 2 years. They are now running their own payment processor as well: Auto-Surf-Money.com. This is a smart move for them. When people pay in with their own cash, it goes to eprofitsurf. When eprofitsurf pays you, it goes to auto-surf-money. Unless you request a check from them, the money never leaves their hands, it just gets shifted around on paper. That's going to allow them to run on a huge defecit, since many people are going to be content to just see their auto-surf-money account grow on paper without pulling out any cash. At least, that's the way that I see it. It just adds another layer of protection. So my advice to everyone is to keep your auto-surf-money account at a minimum. Keep requesting those withdrawals so that the money stays in your hands.

DadnDave's seems like they are poised to come out on top of the situation as well. They did what I had hoped more sites would do: hit the pause button for a while to get things straightened out and then go back to business as usual. The site basically shut down for the month of February, and is going to come back full strength in March. They're going to add an extra month to everyone's upgrades to compensate for the downtime. Congratulations Dave, that was a very smart move. They are also closed now to new members. He seems to have a good crowd around him and I'm looking forward to more successes there.

It's still going to be touch-and-go for a while as the Stormpay and 12DailyPro situation develops, but at least the sites that I have outlined above seem to be in reasonably good shape. We'll just have to wait and see - March should answer a lot of questions for us.
[02/15/2006, 08:21] 12DailyPro - Stormpay: One man's quest for answers
I've been sitting back, relaxing, and letting all this drama play out. I'm not about to go throwing more money into any programs until things settle down. Now that 12DailyPro has garnered the attention of US law enforcement, it will be interesting to see how the authorities view their business model. Are they going to call it a ponzi and bring charges against those in charge? If so, what happens to all the money? As things stand at the moment, I'm ready to cut my losses until things get a little more stable.

But at least one person is not willing to sit idle while other people figure out ways to spend his 12DailyPro earnings. Jeff Johnson is a man from Utah who apparently lost a significant amount of money from his stormpay account that he had earned with 12DailyPro. Although he will still come out ahead if it turns out that he can't recover the money that stormpay has "charged back" to 12DailyPro, many of the friends and relatives who he referred into 12DP will not. So, feeling some responsibility for their predicament, he has started his own investigation into this whole mess. And he took a news crew with him. I've been following his story for about a week now, and although he's not really getting answers to his burning questions, it's at least good to know that there are people out there fighting for us.

I like this story because it's being reported by an independent third party: ABC4 News. However, although we often count on our news media to be objective and complete in their analysis, they are clearly coming in biased against 12DP. They subscribe to the skeptic viewpoint that something as profitable as 12DP can't be anything more than a scam. So I'm not counting on them to fly back to Salt Lake City waving the 12DP flag, but I am counting on them to at least draw some attention to what is going on. You can read the latest report from them here. Jeff stopped in at Stormpay HQ in Clarksville, TN to talk to the head honchos there and ask them some tough questions. He actually was able to talk to John McConnell (owner) and Steve Girsky (CEO), although they refused to show their faces on camera, citing concerns about death threats they had received. What did we glean from this interview? Three major things:

First of all, there is not enough money in 12DP's frozen stormpay account to be able to refund everyone who made an investment and has not yet been paid - even if you add in the money that stormpay has recovered from 12DP member accounts.

Second, Stormpay denies that they have reached into the bank accounts linked to stormpay in order to recover money earned with 12DP. That contradicts a lot of rumors out there in the forums right now, but I find it hard to believe that stormpay would outright lie about this. ABC4 did some investigating and was unable to find a first-hand source who had their account tampered with. I just looked through the 12DP forum myself and wasn't able to find a person who said that stormpay had removed money from their bank account to fund a chargeback. So I guess it's possible that this was just a rumor with no substance that got out of hand.

Third, Stormpay is being audited by the Tennessee's Better Business Bureau and the Division of Consumer Affairs. The BBB, in turn, has enlisted the help of the FBI. Stormpay has said that they welcome the investigation, apparently confident that they will be cleared of any wrongdoing. The problem is that stormpay has created an accounting nightmare by doing all these chargebacks. 12DP's records about who has been paid and who hasn't are no longer accurate, since a lot of the transactions they had completed have been reversed, without their knowledge. It would have been better for stormpay to simply freeze all the money that was in some way or another connected to 12DP, rather than redistributing it all over the place and making a mess of things.

Jeff Johnson is now on his way to Charlotte, NC to talk to people at 12DailyPro. In the latest ABC4 report, Jeff said that he received a message from 12DP stating that Charis would not speak to him, but that he might be able to talk to one of the attorneys. I imagine that won't answer any questions. Attorneys are good at spitting out a lot of words without ever really saying anything. And since 12DP's business model is shady at best, I imagine they aren't going to be very forthcoming with details.
[02/08/2006, 06:43] Is the end near?
Well folks, I've been hanging low for a few weeks. Things are not looking good in the autosurf world right now. I started the year out optimistic - even with the BS from PaidExposure fresh in my memory, a few other programs were beginning to get reasonably profitable for me. I had compounded my earnings from an e-gold upgrade at 12DailyPro, which turned into a nice chunk of change. But then the problems started rolling in.

I'm sure everyone has heard the news now. Stormpay, the payment processor that commanded the largest proportion of autosurfers, started playing games. They first required that all autosurf sites use only stormpay for their transactions. Any site that failed to remove other processors would have their stormpay account frozen. So naturally everyone complied. Charis from 12DailyPro made a bunch of announcements about how they had been communicating with stormpay about how their relationship was so great, and how stormpay was looking forward to continuing to serve the 12DailyPro membership. Then, in a dramatic turn of events, and in their infinite wisdom, stormpay then discovered that many of these surf sites were illegal ponzis, and froze the accounts anyhow, 12DailyPro included.

There is now going to be a huge mess of chargebacks, refunds, and lost earnings at a host of different sites. Every day things seem to get more and more complicated. Who's telling the truth? No one knows. All we can do is sit tight and wait for things to sort themselves out.

The only program that seems to have escaped the stormpay mess is Studiotraffic. Why? Because they have their own processor for handling payouts and therefore don't have to rely on the middleman. That's going to be the route we see a lot of different sites headed. Already, Eprofitsurf/Autosurf.biz and Vivasurf have announced such intentions.

Right now the best advice anyone can get is to get their money out of stormpay. They claim that they are not going out of business, but do you really want to risk your money with a handler that is going through this type of mess? I didn't think so. I requested a partial withdrawal and got it in my bank account within a day. I guess I'm lucky. Many people are having to wait longer than that, and there are reports of debit cards not working and stormpay checks bouncing. The second half of my stormpay money will be coming out later this week. I'm crossing my fingers.
[01/11/2006, 17:59] PaidExposure pulls a 4Daily
Well Aaron Bowering, you've done it. You have confirmed my worst suspicions. Yesterday I visited your website, as I do every day, expecting to see the same old message that has been there for weeks, informing me that you are in the process of transferring accounts to the new system and that I should be patient and wait for the program to resume. But no, this time it's different. Now you're telling me that because people have been nay-saying you all over the internet (precipitated by your lackadaisical effort in getting your site running again), you are no longer planning to resume PaidExposure.

Rather, you're pulling a 4Daily. You're telling people that you are going to refund a currently unannounced proportion of their original investment. Granted, you may be one rung higher than our friend Jim Hunt in the bad karma hierarchy, since you are apparently not counting compounds as a return on investment. But furthermore, since most of your payment processor accounts have been frozen (most likely due to chargebacks from members not getting their payouts for the past three or four months), members who upgraded with funds from anything other than e-gold are basically out of luck. With all your well-deserved negative publicity, you tell us that PaidExposure's name is tainted and so therefore you can't resume it, but will rather launch a new program with a new name and a new vision. Suffice to say you can count me out of that one.

All in all, it sounds as though you have run a pretty successful little scam. You had PaidResponse, which was a wildly popular program launched on the heels of Studiotraffic. You garnered yourself an army of autosurf disciples after running your site successfully for many months. When you launched a sister site, PaidExposure, your loyal subjects ran like lemmings over a cliff to it as well, expecting to reap huge profits. A few short weeks later, you closed down PaidResponse and forced everyone over to PaidExposure without really giving a valid reason for making this move. Then you hit the pause button on PaidExposure, feeding us this account transfer story while you waited for the 45-day chargeback window to expire. Now that we no longer have that option, we are left with you to decide how much if any of our original investment we can expect to receive in our refund.

I was small potatoes compared to some investors, but that doesn't make me any less angry. I'm not at all expecting to see a refund, since I upgraded with paypal. Sure, my statements above may just be speculation, but they seem to paint a pretty clear picture of what you've been doing for the past four months. I look forward to seeing you announce your new program so that I can shun people away from it.
[01/08/2006, 08:35] 12DailyPro changes payment processors: out with E-Gold and in with EMOcorp!
If you've checked out the recent updates from Charis at 12DailyPro, you know that they are giving e-gold the boot. I can understand their nervousness given how screwed up things were last month with all that donwtime, but I can't help but think that this is a bit of an overreaction. Here's what happened:

United States federal investigators with a legal court order enlisted the assistance of e-gold to check out the transaction histories of accounts that they believed were linked to illegal activities. This resulted in e-gold's website being offline for nearly 36 hours in December. That slowed down the upgrade and payout machine at 12DailyPro, much to the annoyance of its members and administrators.

It's important to note that there is absolutely nothing in the BusinessWeek article to suggest that e-gold has done anything wrong. But the article is written with a bit of a slant that suggests e-gold is somewhat complacent about illegalities being financed with their currency. It's no great secret that there are a lot of shady characters who use e-gold to do their shady activities, but those same shady characters use good old US dollars (or Euros, or whatever) to do the same things. Investigators enlist the assistance of e-gold to track down those criminals just as they would enlist the assistance of the bank down the street, and e-gold is always very enthusiastic about complying with their requests, as they should be.

You can read the BusinessWeek article here. (May require free registration)
You can read a rebuttal from the e-gold administrator here.
You can read
an interesting Q&A about e-gold's legal status in the eyes of federal regulators here.

12DailyPro's decision to oust e-gold was made primarily because their service was so unreliable last month while they were assisting with the federal investigation of those suspicious accounts, NOT because e-gold itself has been accused of doing anything illegal. Furthermore, they fear that more extensive investigations like that may lead to the freezing of a lot of accounts found to be linked to illegal activities, and the resulting possible decrease in e-gold liquidity. That could slow things down for processing payouts and upgrades. They have chosen to be proactive and switch to a processor that they feel will be more reliable in the future: EMOcorp.

EMOcorp is a very attractive alternative. Their fees for transferring money between EMO account holders are negligible. You can withdraw money from your EMO account by printing out a money order with your computer and taking it to your local bank for cashing. They also have a debit card that you can fund with your EMO balance and use at ATM's or POS's, or you can transfer the money directly to your checking account. You can even link your EMO account to your e-gold account and exchange your e-gold for cash through one of three supported exchangers. All in all it's a pretty complete package.

But what I like best about EMOcorp are the security features. You log in with an email address and a password. Then you can add additional layers of security. You can require that a code be entered every time someone logs into your account. You print out a randomized code card like the one at left and then use it every time you want to access your account. So long as you make sure that card doesn't fall into the wrong hands (or get lost), there is no way that your account can be compromised, even if someone steals your password with a keylogger. You can also restrict access to your account to specific IP addresses or ranges of IP addresses. And they have anti-money laundering features that require you to confirm your identity with various types of documentation before they allow you to print money orders, or move money bewteen EMO and your bank or other e-currencies. It really is an impressive setup.

Payouts at 12DailyPro are going to be delayed while they take care of all the pending e-gold payouts and start people up with EMOcorp. Those of us who have e-gold payouts from upgrades that expired between December 24-January 18th have several options for our payouts.
They are going to open a special support center on Monday, January 9th so that members can select one of these options. All pending e-gold transactions should be completed by January 31st, although many will be resolved before then.
  1. Request payout with StormPay
  2. Request payout with EMO
  3. Request that 12DailyPro mail you an EMO money order ($1000 minimum)
  4. Compound those earnings, purchase upgrades at 12DailyPro, and then get your next cashout with one of the other alternatives.
Now, it really is a hassle to be changing over like this. I'm not saying that I'm not excited about my new EMO account (in fact, I hope that other programs follow suit and add them), but I hope that it's worth 12DailyPro's trouble to be doing this. I don't expect e-gold to fall off the face of the earth any time soon, but I would hope that they are better about keeping their members informed when downtime of this magnitude occurs. There are a lot of internet businesses that rely on e-gold for their livelihood, and they have nothing to do with child porn, drugs, terrorism, or money laundering.
[01/02/2006, 03:58] Payout Hell... Part II
Well, the good news is that the month is coming to an end and that means a hopeful end to payout claims in the vivasurf forum. Their support staff is now back in business and people are getting taken care of a lot more efficiently than I was able to do on my own. There were a couple problems that contributed to the slowdown this month. First, e-gold's website was offline for almost a solid week. That certainly didn't help things at all. A scripting change also messed things up a bit. Earlier in the month they had to remove both Paypal and Moneybookers from the payout options. When that happened, everyone who had their details set to either of them was defaulted to something else. Many people didn't catch that and as a result had an invalid payout address when it came to payday. Then everyone came to the forum to wonder where their money was. Support has been pretty reasonable about helping people out that were adversely affected by this, but there's a lot of other people that are posting claims without realizing that they were never due for a payout in the first place. I guess that's what you get when the membership grows to such a level that there's a lot more people to make mistakes like that. Now prospective members are probably coming to the forum and probably turning away because they see all these payout complaints.

Robert is trying to nip that in the bud, and he sent out an email earlier this week telling people that they need to make sure that their concerns are valid before posting them in a public place where it can deter new members. The message was sent out to all the upgraded members, and some individuals mistakenly thought that the message was aimed specifically at them, and took it as a bit of an insult. When the fallout from that misunderstanding started appearing, Robert quickly sent out another email explaining that it wasn't aimed at anyone in particular.

Beginning next month they are going to be a little more strict when it comes to false claims. If you post in the forum with an unsubstantiated missing payout claim, you're going to be fined $5. A bit of a strongarm technique, if you ask me, but we'll see if it gets the job done. The problem, it seems to me, is that there are just a bunch of uninformed people out there. I think they might have better results if they would just do a better job communicating. Robert has countered that he spends his time with investments so that we can be paid the returns that we expect, and that therefore he can't devote too much time to sending out emails all the time. But bad publicity is bad for the program, and fining people $5 every time they make some uninformed post isn't going to do anything for Vivasurf's image. It will be interesting to see what happens next month. To be sure, I'm not going to be messing around with payout claims again. I'll let them handle that. It's just not worth it, since I'm not able to fix the problem accounts anyhow.

Lots of people have been requesting e-gold cashouts there this month. And I came across a few posts from support saying that they were no longer going to pay e-gold if you haven't already upgraded with e-gold. This concerned me, since it would leave my only option as StormPay, and I really have no interest in paying their crazy fees or joining their NetIBA pyramid scheme. So I sent a message with the contact form and asked what I should do. Amazingly support replied within a matter of hours and said that I should be fine, and that I could leave my payout details set to e-gold. I guess the fact that I have already been paid once to e-gold made it kosher.

Meanwhile, US-Surf is going nicely. Thanks to some generous upgrades from my downline, I'm expecting a payout next month already. Payday is supposed to be on the 5th, and that's less than a week away. Once those payments go out I'm sure things will take off quickly.

Simply6 was just launched as well. This is another site run by the same folks that do Mommashouse and MySurfFamily. I'm upgraded at Mommashouse, but only minimally. I'm not all that excited about them because the cashout minimum of $40 for members like me is pretty steep and will take a long time to reach. Still, they don't show any signs of slowdown. Simply6 pays 6% daily for 30 days and therefore gives a bit of a quicker return that more to my liking. I purchased 2 upgrades there and am looking forward to getting paid in early February.

12DailyPro continues to perform amazingly despite all odds. My inintal $24 deposit with them has grown quite a bit, and I'm now putting in $50-$100 a week. I had been a little nervous when Christmas was around the corner, anticipating that people would upgrade less in favor of purchasing christmas presents. That fear turned out to be largely unfounded. Still no complaints of missing payouts, and they handled the e-gold downtime admirably, with only a couple days of extra waiting at the most. If this site turns out to be nothing more than the world's largest Ponzi and fails, a lot of people are going to cry, but until then I'll continue to enjoy seeing the e-gold rolling into my account.

Happy New Year, everyone!
[01/02/2006, 03:57] 2 payouts to round out the year
Imagine my surprise this morning when I awoke to find two new payouts. The first was actually not that surprising. Another quick payout from Knightsurfers. Not sure why I haven't invested more than a few bucks into this site, Nate seems to run it really well, and has even dealt successfully with the people at Moneybookers who wanted to limit his account there. Perhaps I'll throw a few more bucks in there soon.

The second payout really knocked my socks off. I got my first payout from US-Surf. Payday for them is supposed to be the 5th of the month, which I thought was going to be tough to accomplish. But lo and behold they actually paid me on the 1st of the month. Kudos to Robert and staff for getting that done so expediently.

[12/24/2005, 09:37] Payout Hell
Well, if there's one thing that really sucks about being a moderator at Vivasurf, it's being there around payout time. Every month the forum gets swarmed with people asking the same questions. Typing the same answer over and over again gets a little tiring. But what can you do? I figure the people are at least entitled to a response, even if it happens to be a sarcastic one. This month there are a few dozen people with outstanding payouts that are still waiting for their money. I've been doing my best to help sort the claims and get them taken care of. But boy is it a lot of work. I don't envy Robert at all. Thank goodness I'm doing this for a hobby, if I was actually hired to do this job I would probably quit. As it is now, I do what I can with the time that I have, and I'm happy with whatever I can contribute. As I told one user, I hope Vivasurf lasts forever, but if it flops it won't be because I didn't do my part!

Robert has told me that there are plans in the works to move Vivasurf to a server cluster in the very near future. They've been testing it out and he'll make an official announcement before that happens. That should clear up a lot of the problems people are experiencing with slow surfing, and they'll likely bump the surf max up to 50 sites again. It's been at 15-30 for quite some time now. Furthermore, with that move they are going to implement a lot more automation into the payout process, and that will hopefully make this whole payout procedure a lot more efficient. Let me tell you, I'm really looking forward to that!
